But what is Lilith’s story and how is this so inherently a part of our work?
At the heart of the way we design, make and share our clothing is always a powerful story set to inspire and empower; and none does this more than the story of Lilith. For centuries her presence has demanded attention and one thing we love about mythology is it’s unique way of revealing the deeper truths about humanity. Lilith, a figure whose origins are shrouded in ancient mystery, has evolved over centuries into a symbol of feminism, freedom, and resilience. Her story, like those of many women both fictional and real, has been told and retold, shaped and reshaped, offering new perspective with each interpretation. Yet one thing remains the same in the eyes of the Ancient Earth team... she is a symbol of power, divine rebellion and our inherent feminine knowing.
Lilith’s story dates back to early Mesopotamian mythology, where she first appears in texts as a demon associated with storms and chaos. Over time, she was woven into Jewish folklore and medieval texts as a fallen women who preys on young children. In these versions, our divine rebel is described as Adam’s first wife, created from the same earth as him—an equal in form and being to govern the Garden of Eden side by side.
Early accounts document that conflict arises when Adam demands Lilith’s subservience, insisting that she lie beneath him. Lilith refuses, declaring her equality and takes a leap of faither to leave Eden to seek freedom. Her departure from paradise is a radical act of defiance, a choice that comes with profound consequences. The history books document her fall from grace well and in many interpretations still in circulation today she becomes the mother of demons, the devils own concubine and a figure head for subservient feminine rage.
However, at its core, the story of Lilith is a narrative of women’s divine power and our fight for sacred autonomy. Lilith’s refusal to conform to her male counterpart’s demands can be viewed as one of the earliest depictions of a woman claiming her agency and believing in herself. In a world where mythology often casts women in passive or subjugatory roles, Lilith’s assertiveness is revolutionary - and here in lies the inspiration and influences for our most profound clothing collection. She is ancient, she is of the earth, untamed and whole; exactly how we want every single one of customers to feel in our designs.
Lilith’s decision to leave Eden is an act of courage. Walking away from paradise, a place of safety and comfort, requires a leap of faith and she consciously chooses the uncertainty of the wild and lawless lands over the certainty of Eden and submission. In doing so, Lilith demonstrates the transformative power of choice and the sacrifices often required to live authentically. Beyond this the heroine of this ancient piece of mythology also serves as a constant reminder to embrace our shadow and remember that we are made for so much more than life of we didn’t choose. She is an icon of power, disobedience and rebellion... when it wears the guise of a gentle woman.
Despite the conflicting interpretations of Lilith’s story throughout the centuries as both villain and saviour, we believe that both her depictions can be reconciled and live within our hearts peacefully. As both the storming chaos of feminine rage, mother to the unlovable AND the feminist icon of freedom we begin to build a true picture of womanhood in every stitch and pattern of our clothing - that women are multi-faceted, complex, powerful beings of the earth that live life to it’s fullest and will always choose to leave the comfort of Eden if it allows them to live in their truth.
